School board OKs $95 million fieldhouse bond election

The Barbers Hill ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Monday night to call a $95 million bond election in May to renovate athletic facilities in response to continued enrollment growth and the district’s transition to Class 6A, the state’s largest school classification. Passage of the bond would not result in an increase to the Barbers Hill ISD tax rate.

The proposed bond would fund the construction, acquisition, and equipping of a multipurpose athletic fieldhouse, along with additional stadium improvements, including expanded fieldhouse capacity and new locker room facilities.

The district’s current fieldhouse was constructed in 1980 and fully paid off by 1998. The proposed new fieldhouse would serve as a multipurpose facility, including the ability to host convocations and graduation ceremonies in the event of inclement weather.

Barbers Hill ISD’s total student enrollment has grown from fewer than 1,500 students in 1980 to more than 8,100 today. Enrollment projections indicate the district will continue to grow at an annual rate of 3 to 4 percent over the next decade.

“One of our key district goals this year was to compare our athletic facilities to those of other Class 6A districts, and this initiative is a result of that work,” said Barbers Hill ISD Superintendent Dr. Greg Poole.

Since 1998, Barbers Hill ISD has held eight bond elections, all of which have passed by wide margins. The most recent bond, totaling $378 million and approved by voters in 2024, funded the construction of two new campuses and districtwide improvements and received support from 82 percent of voters.

Election Day for the $95 million fieldhouse bond is May 2, with early voting beginning April 20.
